Ali Thomson is an Edinburgh-based sculptor who has carved out a niche: stone shoes. From Arkk Copenhagen to Nike, he’s been commissioned to craft the most beautiful marble sculptures.
And we were asked by Arkk Copenhagen to film their own iconic sneaker being turned into stone. What a thing to see – a block of stone turned into the smooth curves of a shoe.
We filmed each stage of Ali’s process, from stone selection and measurement to the cutting and chipping and chiselling and endless sanding and smoothing to the engraving of Arkk’s brand mark.
It was fascinating. And unforgettable.
